How do I Know I Need a Rehair?

Every time you play you are stretching the hair. The longer you practice the more stretched out the hair becomes. Factors such as high humidity combined with the stretching will make the hair expire rapidly. There is also the occassional, "oops, I left the bow tightened overnight" mistake. All that will result in needing fresh hair more often.

Under everyday use, hair stretches and loses its rosin holding qualities in about 6 months. After that, you are on borrowed time. If you play and practice about 2 hours a day or less have your bow rehaired once a year. If you play and practice 2 to 4 hours per day or more, bring your bow for rehair every 6 months.

Here are some pictures to help you find when you will need that next rehair:

Let's begin with loosening the tension of the bow. Make sure the Frog is pushed in as far as it will go towards the Thumb Leather.

The Hair should be relaxed and on top of the stick. If it is sagging a bit, that is OK, as long as it does not fall under the stick.

This is the proper relaxed position
for the bow when being stored.

If you see the hair hanging under the stick as in the picture below, take it to be rehaired.
The hair is overstretched.

If you find you cannot tighten the hair, do not force it, one of two things are happening:

  1. The hair may be overstretched and the frog eyelet has reached the end of the channel.
  2. There is a problem with the bow screw or eyelet.

Bring the bow for professional repairs.

If the Hair is as dirty as this bow is, you also need to renew the hair.

Oils from our hand combined with rosin will coat the hair with greasy looking residue. Washing your hands before playing is always a good idea.

If the Hair is not sagging below the stick, but your hair is dirty and your last rehair was only a few weeks ago, the hair may only need professional cleaning.

Notice how much hair is missing on the edge of this bow.

That is a very good sign the hair needs replacement.

Using the bow with hair like this causes uneven tension on the bow and may begin to warp the stick.

WARNING!
...........BOW BUGS!

Yes, this hair has been infested by very small hair eating creatures.

Hair BUG Exterminating Procedures

  2. Open your case and all compartments.
  3. VACUUM your case.
  4. Take your instrument case and expose it to the sunlight for a couple of days.
  5. VACUUM your case again before you put your instrument and bow back.
